What is Crucifixion?

A medical doctor provides a physical description: The cross is placed on the ground and the exhausted man is quickly thrown backwards with his shoulders against the wood. The legionnaire feels for the depression at the front of the wrist. He drives a heavy, square wrought iron nail through the wrist deep into the wood. Quickly he moves to the other side and repeats the action, being careful not to pull the arms too tightly, but to allow some flex and movement. The cross is then lifted into place. The left foot is pressed backwards...Continue reading

Majority Rule?

The Bible says, “Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause to decline after many to wrest judgment” (Exodus 23:2). When the children of Israel were coming to the borders of the Land that flowed with milk and honey they sent out twelve spies. In Numbers 13 we find all twelve spies listed. Out of that number how many do you remember? Moses gave them a charge of what they were to spy out within the land. “And Moses sent them to spy out the land of...

That’s Just His Opinion

“These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and search the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” These that were “more noble” were the Jews in the city of Berea. The reason they were “more noble” was because they “received the word with all readiness of mind.” Here was a group of people that listened to what was being preached with eagerness. Notice that the passage says, … and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.” How often do you take...Continue reading

Hope

“For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doeth he yet hope for? Hope has been described by one person as, “desire plus expectation.” There are some things that we desire and we expect them in the conclusion. Salvation from our sins is one of those things that we desire. The sins we have committed separate us from God. “Behold the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy that he cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated...Continue reading

The Voice of God

Three times God the Father audibly spoke during the life of His Son. One was after His baptism (Matthew 3:17 “And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”) Another time is at the Mount of Transfiguration. Jesus has with Him Peter, James, and John. Peter acting like he did most of the time, spoke. He mentioned building three tabernacles: one for Him, one for Moses and one for Elias. This was a good thought as far as Peter was concerned. He was thinking of honoring...Continue reading

Why Quit?

“For Demas hath forsaken my, having loved this present world, and it departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia” (2 Timothy 4:10). People quit the church with varying degrees. Some do quit the church altogether. The cause of this could be because of many some think reasons. The devil acted is some way to discourage these people so they gave up on God and what He has done for them; they quit! The devil works through people. “But he turned, and said unto Peter. Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offense...

Power

When any one considers a word, this word must be considered in the context in which it is used. The word can then be discerned of the meaning, which the author had intended. Word can have different meanings. Let us consider the word “power.” First when dealing with different languages it is not always easy to translate from one language into another. The word “love” comes to mind for illustration. In English this word has several different meanings. We have others words that could come under the heading of love. The word, “charity” is an...Continue reading

Liberty

Galatians 5:1 states: “Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.” Paul is dealing with a problem the church was having during the first century, but he speaks of liberty and bondage. This subject is one that ought to be of utmost importance to us today also. During the first century there were those who were trying to bind the Old Testament upon those striving to become Christians. The battle (Luke by inspiration uses the terms, “dissension” and “disputation” in Acts...Continue reading

How Are We Doing?

“For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise” (2 Corinthians 10:13). There must have been a problem, in Corinth, of people comparing Paul with other people. The context of 2 Corinthians bears this out; “Do we begin again to commend ourselves? Or need we, as some others, epistles of commendation to you, or letters of commendation from you?” (2 Corinthians 3:1). Also, “For we commend not ourselves again unto you, but give...

Memorial Day

Today is Memorial Day. It was a time to remember those who had sacrificed for our freedom. We must continue to remember that the freedoms that we enjoy are not free. It has cost some life, some limbs, others liberty. Romans 12:7 reads, “Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honor to whom honor.” Every generation has a war to fight. Our grandfathers had WWI our fathers WWII then our generation had Korea or Vietnam. Today’s generation has Iraq. Each one of...Continue reading
