Does saying “The Sinner’s Prayer” Save?

Preachers sometimes invite listeners to pray something such as, “God, I am sorry I have sinned. Please forgive me and let Jesus come into my heart. I thank you for forgiving me and giving me eternal life. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen” The preacher then says, “Since you have asked Christ into your life, you are now His child, and your sins are forgiven.” The problem, however, is that the promise of forgiveness is from a man, not God. God has never promised to respond to “the sinner’s prayer.” Prayer is a privilege for...Continue reading

“What Is in Thine Hand?”

We read in the Old Testament of God speaking to Moses from the burning bush, commissioning him to lead the chosen people out of Egypt. But Moses objected, saying that no one would believe him to have been sent by God. When asked what was in his hand, Moses answered, “A rod.” The Lord told him to put it down. As we know, it became a serpent. When, at God’s direction, he caught it up, it became a rod again. God is powerful and He could have chosen anything in the universe to use as...Continue reading

After I’m Gone

Hebrews 11:4 records these amazing words, “he being dead still speaks.” This passage reveals that the good testimony of Able lives on even though he has gone the way of all the earth (Josh. 23:14) a living legacy from the grave. What will we leave behind to speak for us when we are dead? Will it be like Joshua’s influence that lived on in the generation after his death? “And it came to pass after these things, that Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of the LORD, died, being an hundred and ten yours...Continue reading

Laws and Opinions

Galatians 5:6 says, “For in Jesus Christ neither circumcision availeth anything, nor uncircumcision: but faith which worketh by love.” There are some things that do not matter. There are some things we may do any way we desire. There are other things for which God has specific laws.  When God has told us to do something, we must do exactly what God has said. If he has told us how to do it, we must do it the way he said to do it, but if God has told us to do something and has...Continue reading

Tragedy

A few years ago the news was full of the events of the nightclub in Rhode Island. The week or so before that it was the nightclub in Chicago. Why is there so much new coverage about what took place? Is it because of the number of people that perished in the blaze? Is it because of the use of pyrotechnics? Were they used illegally? These question will be answered sooner or later in the courts, but I wonder why all the news coverage? I do think it was a tragedy but for different reasons...Continue reading

Guard

Paul gave Timothy a duty in 1 Timothy 6:20, “O Timothy, keep that which is committed to thy trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings, and oppositions of science falsely so called.” The word “keep” has the idea of isolation; to watch; i.e. be on guard. The word “committed” has the idea of a deposit; i.e. trust. “Profane words” are empty words. The duty of Timothy is to guard that which was deposited into his trust. That is the Gospel, 2 Tim. 2:13-14, “Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me,...Continue reading

What Can We Do?

This is an interesting question due to the political climate today. We think that we are just one citizen and what can we do to help.  There is always a lot we can do. One thing for sure we do not need to do nothing! That is a sure way to lose ground and let the enemy do what they please. This is also an interesting question due to our religious climate today too.  Yes, there are things you can do to help yourself and also help the church. What can you do? Here they...Continue reading

Must

This week I want us to consider the word “must.” Webster defines this word as “obligated, required, compelled.” Vine’s as “impersonal verb signifying it is necessary or one must.” Strong has “third person singular active present, it is necessary.”  Then the finally dictionary Thayer defines this word as, “it is necessary, there is need of it, it behooves, is right and proper.” The word “must” is used 132 times in the King James Version of the Bible. The word that is translated “must” is used 104 times in the New Testament. This word is translated...Continue reading

Signs for the Times!

How many wasted miles, injuries and deaths would be avoided if only people read signs?! God must, think the same thing, as He watches men fly down the devil’s highway ignoring all the road signs. It pays to watch for signs! DO NOT ENTER! “Enter not into the path of the wicked, and go not in the way of evil men. Avoid it, pass not by it, turn from it, and pass away” (Proverbs 4:14-15). “Blessed is the man that walked not in the counsel of the ungodly, not standeth in the way of sinners,...Continue reading

Does this Seem Ridiculous?

Hello…Yes…Oh, you’re Johnny’s teacher. I’ve been meaning to call you…No; he isn’t planning to be in school this year. You see he has so much work to do at the church – he has Bible school lessons, church services, youth activities and such takes up his time; then there are daily devotionals at home and other interests, so there isn’t time left for school… Well, yes I know that school is important, and I know that you are doing a fine job with the kids in this community – and I’ve been intending to write...Continue reading
