Work of the Church

The work of the church is three fold in nature. Ephesians 4: 12 gives these three works, “For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ.” David Lipscomb is recorded as saying about this verse in the Gospel Advocate commentaries, “Then the first and most important work of the church is to seek to perfect themselves in the divine knowledge and Christian character. Second to look after the poor, afflicted, and destitute of the children of God (he did not believe in “saints only”...

The Shame of Nakedness (2)

The Shame of Nakedness (2) Wayne Jones Editor’s Note: this is a continuation from last week’s bulleting.  I do hope this is informative and that it is applied to one’s live. How can I violate God’s Divine Dress Code? Certainly, there must be exceptions to nakedness, shame, and God’s dress code.” One understandable exception is found in the relationship between husband and wife. The writer of Hebrews stated: “Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled…” (Heb. 13:4). Other exceptions might include the relationship between a doctor and patient or child to parent when...Continue reading

The Shame of Nakedness

The Shame of Nakedness Wayne Jones John warned us to “Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world’ (1 John 2:15). The world to which John refers in this verse is not the physical earth or even the souls that make up the world around us. John uses the word cosmos which indicates a “system or an order.” For example, we often refer to the “world of business” or the “world of sports.” It is a sphere that has its own agenda and philosophy. This “world” that we are forbidden to...

Does saying “The Sinners’ Prayer” Save?

Preachers sometimes invite listeners to pray something such as, “God, I am sorry I have sinned. Please forgive me and let Jesus come into my heart. I thank you for forgiving me and giving me eternal life. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen” The preacher then says, “Since you have asked Christ into your life, you are now His child, and your sins are forgiven.” The problem, however, is that the promise of forgiveness is from a man, not God. God has never promised to respond to “the sinner’s prayer.” Prayer is a privilege for...Continue reading

Older Than Dirt

This came across my desk and I did take the test and yes, I am older than dirt.  How many of you are too!  Hope you have a good laugh out of this too. We were cleaning out my grandmother’s house and found an old Royal Crown Cola bottle. It the bottle top was a stopper with a bunch of holes in it. I knew immediately what it was, but my granddaughter had no idea. She thought they had tried to make it a saltshaker or something. I knew it was the bottle that sat...Continue reading

Is the Gospel Enough?

“I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom; Preach the word; be instant in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine. For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lust shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; and they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.” 2 Timothy 4:1-4 This passage was true in Paul’s...Continue reading

The Fingers of Prayer

“The Fingers of Prayer” Glenn Hitchcock The “Fingers of Prayer” will help us remember who to pray for: Your thumb is nearest to you. So begin your prayers by praying for those closest to you. They are the easiest to remember. To pray for our loves ones is a “sweet duty.” The nest finger is the pointing finger. Pray for those who teach, instruct and heal. This includes teachers, doctors, ministers and our elders. They need support and wisdom in pointing others in the right direction. Keep them in your prayers. The next finger is...Continue reading

Does Thinking A Thing To Be Right Make It Right?

There are many who really do think a thing is right because they think it is right. This can happen to many people in many different areas of life. A child can think a math problem is right but that does not make it right. Do you remember having to show your work to the teacher who then could show you exactly where you were wrong? Doctors have thought they were doing right when they removed a limb or preformed an operations, but that did not make it right. They had removed the wrong limp!...Continue reading

No Assembling Required

Over the years I have had many bulletins from different congregations from many different parts of our nation. A bulletin article crossed my desk with this title; so the title of this article is not original with me. OI have changes a few things within the article so, just trying to give credit where it is due.  This article has many interesting points that need to be pondered. Have you been to the store and was looking at something big that said assembly required? Or have you looked closer to see if the store would...Continue reading

Will God Make Exceptions On Judgment Day?

This statement, “There is an exception to every rule.” Is not found in the Bible. However, it is seemingly a statement of truth. Exceptions for rules is a practice for which we have become accustom in our society. People expect exception to rules to be made on their behalf. The speed limit on most interstates is 70 miles per hour except for most people driving on them. That is only the speed limit for the few people who are pulled over for speeding. On judgment day many will want God to make exceptions to His...Continue reading
