For What Are You Looking?

We all are looking for something.  When I go golfing, I have to look for the golf ball.  When I go fishing I look for where the fish are.  We also are looking for a house.  You may be looking at something for your house; it might be carpet, paint or wallpaper. Sometimes I have to look for the car keys, or my glasses.  When we are in the depths of looking could we say that we are seeking these things?

While these things are physical, what about the spiritual side?  Do we seek the Lord? “Seek ye the Lord while he may be found, call ye upon him while he is near” (Isaiah 55:6). How do we seek the Lord?  When a child looks for something sometimes he does not look very hard.  This child might go into a room and do a quick glance and then when asked say, “Yes I looked in the room.”  Did he really look?  I have heard some people look for their glasses and they were right on top of their head!  Are we looking in the right place for the Lord?  Have you ever lost your car keys and looked very diligently for them only to find them right where they were supposed to be! How diligently are we looking for the Lord?

We find in the scriptures that the Lord is looking for some folks!  Luke 19:10 says, “For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.”  The Lord is seeking the Lost.  He paid an awful price to seek them out and save them. Some seem to be playing hide and seek with the Lord!  He is seeking and they are hiding!  Remember there may come a time when He gives up seeking!

We find in the scriptures that the devil is seeking some folks too.  1 Peter 5:8 says, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.”  The devil is seeking some whom he can devour.  He is hungry and is looking for prey.  Are you aware of this?  Are you aware that the devil is out there looking, seeking you to gobble you up?  Some seem unaware and are being taken in by the devil in one bite.  We should be looking out for him and avoiding him with all our being.  James says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you” (James 4:7).

There are some things we are not to be seeking as well. Paul said, “For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? For if I yet please men, I should not be the servant of Christ” (Galatians 1:10). Are we seeking to please men or God?  Some may try to please men, they are ever working because one cannot please all the people all the time.  When one group is please another is not pleased.  When one person is pleased, another is not.  The idea is to please God. How do we seek to please the Lord?

1) We are to seek the kingdom of God first (Matthew 6:33).  Where are spiritual things on your list?  Are you sure they are number one?  If something interferes with worship what do you do?  If ball games are scheduled at the same time Bible study or worship is scheduled, where will you be?  Which comes first?  If there is work that can be done at other times but you do them during worship services, which comes first in your life?  When we say that spiritual things are first in our life are they really first?

2) We are to seek those things that are above. “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God” (Colossians 3:1).  What are our goals on earth?  If you were to list the 10 goals that you want to accomplish on this life what would you list?  Where would heaven be?  Would it even be on that list?  While we might list some good things like education for our children, still where would heaven be on this list?  Have we even thought about making heaven one of our goals in this life?  Where will you be for eternity?

3) We are to seek peace. “Let him eschew evil, and do good; let him seek peace, and ensue it” (1 Peter 3:11).  Are we seeking peace with God?  Are we seeking peace with our fellow man?  If we obey God we will have a peace that passes all understanding (Phil 4:7). This will also give you peace with your fellow man!

What are you seeking?  Are you looking for any of these good things?  Why not start looking, seeking for that mansion that Jesus is preparing for those who love Him!

Love, Keith
