Fit for the Kingdom of God

The Lord said in Luke 9:62, “No man, having put his hand to the plough, and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” The word “fit” means well suited for. When the ploughman was out in the field watching his plough instead of watching where he needed to go, he was not suitable for the job.  You see God wants people who are suited for the job He has given each of us to do.  God wants people who want to do the best job they can for Him.  God wants people who want to be Christians, not feel like they have to be Christians.  Are you a want to be Christian or do you feel the need to be a Christian?  The question then comes to mind, “Are we ‘fit for’ or  ‘well suited’ for the kingdom of God?”

If one asked the question, “How many want to go to heaven?” Who would respond in the negative?  How many would say, “No, I really don’t want to go to Heaven?”  We all want to go but are we “suited” for the job in heaven? This is something we need to consider very seriously for this life is the dress rehearsal for eternity.  There are several questions that one needs to consider to see if they are fit for the kingdom of God.

We all must stand before Christ and give an account for what we have done in this body (2 Cor. 5:10). Christ will judge all of the people who have ever lived (Acts 17:30-31)! Now picture you standing before Christ on that day and you are discussing with Him the deeds you have and are doing in this body that He gave you. You are discussing some things with Him and He holds out His hands.  He shows His side where the spear pierced, and asked you, “Why were you not willing to do what I said?” The blood stains are still there and He asked, “What have you done for me, look at what I did for you?” The question comes haunting to us, “Are we fit for the kingdom of God?” We must prepare now for eternity.

So there are several questions that I would like to ask to see if we are “fit” (suited) for the kingdom of God.

1) Do you like to worship God here on earth?  That may sound silly, but it is a very serious question.  Where are you when worship time comes around? We all have 168 hours a week, how hard is it to give God four of those hours? Consider how often some come to worship.  Are they saying by their actions that they are not “fit” for the kingdom of God? Are these people regular in their attendance? If worshiping God here on this side of eternity is boring then how can we worship God for eternity? Consider also how long we worship God on any given day.  If it is Sunday we worship God for about 2 hours, some seem not to like to do that.  It seems hard for some to make it to worship on Sunday.  If we are not willing to worship God on earth how will it be worshiping Him for eternity?  Will you like it in eternity if you don’t like it now? Are we “fit” for the Kingdom of God if we do not like to worship God? Are we “suitable” for the Kingdom of God if we do not like to worship Him now? Consider this in light of eternity!

2) Do you like to sing praises to God on earth?  I have seen people who must not like to sing praises to God.  I have seen this both as a song leader and as a preacher.  I wonder about this, if people do not like to sing praises to God here on earth, or they may think that it is unimportant to sing to God here on earth, how can this person enjoy heaven at all?  You see when we get to heaven we will be worshiping God and one way we do that is to sing praises to Him (Rev. 15:3; 19:5). Also consider how some feel when we have the fourth Sunday singing.  Why is the number down, oh, it is not just here but in every congregation when singing is being done some will not come for one reason or another.  But if we are going to sing heaven for eternity and we don’t like it here or don’t think that it is important then how can we enjoy heaven at all? Is this person “fit” for the kingdom of God?  If a person does not like it here how can they like singing in heaven for eternity?

3) Do you like to be with the saints?  If a person does not like to be in the presence of God and with His saints now, then please tell me how that person can enjoy heaven for eternity? When fellowship is planned what is your attitude toward that fellowship?  You say you do not enjoy it then what about heaven will you enjoy it? Are you “suitable” for the Kingdom of God, or maybe is the kingdom of God “suitable” to you?

Love, Keith
