Encouraging News

Some say churches of Christ are graying and dying, but are these claims true? While some congregations have a majority of members that are retired, many more are filled with children and young adults. Churches of Christ actually have a larger percentage of young adults than the national average. In fact, we rank #3 among religious groups having the most adults aged 18-29. Statistician Flavil Yeakley, Jr. confidently says these things about churches of Christ: (1) We are the twelfth-largest religious group in America; (2) we are the sixth-fastest growing church in America; (3) we...

Confusing Messages

The advertising industry is big and a powerful industry. There are many proofs of this. Take for example the slogans of many products. Plop, plop, fizz, fizz, is the product line for Alka-Seltzer. “You deserve a break today” is one from a food franchise. “You can have it your way” is another one from the food industry. There are other slogans that you can think of to show which show how power this method of business. There is some well meaning but confusing messages that has been produced by these same people. Let us consider...Continue reading

The Missing Lamps

In a certain mountain village in Europe several centuries ago, a nobleman wondered what legacy he would leave to his townspeople. At last he decided to build them a church building. No one saw the completed plans for the building until it was finished. When the people gathered, they marveled at its beauty and completeness. Then someone asked, “But where are the lamps? How will it be lighted?” The nobleman pointed to some brackets in the walls. Then he gave to each family a lamp that they were to bring with them each time they...Continue reading

Judas

Character studies of Bible personalities are beneficial studies. There are those whom we have studied over and over again. We glean new insights to their lives and lessons to be applied to our lives each time we study them. Application of these lessons to our lives is really one of the purposes of any Bible study. We all like to study those individuals who will encourage us in our daily walk toward heaven. There is a time when we need to study those individuals who have a negative life. The purpose in studying these individuals...Continue reading

Questions

Contained within the book of Psalms are several questions about who is close to God. Psalm 15:1 asks, “Lord, who shall abide in thy tabernacle? Who shall dwell in thy holy hill?” Psalm 24:3 asks, “Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord? Or who shall stand in his holy place?” In Psalm 15 when the question is asked, “Who shall abide in thy tabernacle” one must remember that the temple was not built yet. We must remember chronology when reading the Bible. The temple was not built until Solomon was king. Therefore we...

How Do You Feel About Others?

There is much contained in the Bible about how we should feel and treat others. The Golden Rule deals with how we should treat others, “Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that mean should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets” (Matthew 7:12). The parable of the Good Samaritan is answering the question of, who is my neighbor (Luke 10:29). Jesus then asks the question, “Which of these three, thinkest thou, was neighbour unto him that fell among the thieves? (Luke 10:36). The lawyer answered...

Flu Shot

This is the time of year when many get their flu shot. The doctors warn many whose health is questionable to partake of this shot every year. There are those that are young who need it. There are those who are middle aged who need it. And there are those who are more mature who are to get this shot. It will do well to take this shot so that one will not get the flu. Likewise there is a flu shot for apostasy. Listen to what Paul discusses with Timothy, “If thou put the...Continue reading

No Man Is An Island

“For none of us liveth to himself, and no man dieth to himself” (Romans 14:7). Jesus taught, “Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick; and it giveth light unto...Continue reading

Workers Together

1 Corinthians 3:9 which states, “For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, ye are God’s building.” Paul uses a building and a field (NKJV) to illustrate the work the church is to be doing. Each system of a building is to be doing its work. The electrical system must do its work. The plumbing system must do its work. The framing must do its work also. Each system has a work to do and must do their work. In the field it is the same. Each part of the field must...Continue reading
